Tammy Kirkley

(Sept. 22, 2017) – Hamlet City Clerk Tammy Kirkley graduated from Richmond Community College in 2015, earning an Associate in Business Administration, as well as a certificate in Public Administration.

“The combination of my associate degree with the Public Administration certificate has helped me gain a better understanding of the technical side of the intrinsic operations within local government,” Kirkley said. “The Public Administration program helped me gain a better understanding of many legal principles and workings within a local government setting and has helped me build a stronger foundation to grow in my position as city clerk.”

Kirkley was also able to take some of her classes online, which allowed her to work and go to college.

“Working full-time in a local government job, which goes beyond the normal 8-to-5 work hours was somewhat difficult. The fact that RichmondCC offered some of my classes online made my life easier and is a major advantage for busy people like myself,” Kirkley said.

Kirkley recently completed two state certifications required within her profession, and she serves on the board of directors for several local community service agencies.

The Hamlet resident chose to attend RichmondCC because of its location right here in her hometown and its affordable tuition rates, but she discovered it offered much more through the personalized attention the instructors provided and the quality of education she received. She said her instructors were very helpful and played a big part in her success.

“Devon Hall (dean of Applied Sciences and Engineering at RichmondCC) has been a great help to me in reaching my educational goals,” Kirkley said. “He helped me assess my future goals and provided information on me obtaining my bachelor’s degree, which has motivated me to change my current focus of studies to the Public Administration program at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke,” she said.

Many of her classes from RichmondCC transferred to UNCP, so that gives her a jumpstart in the baccalaureate program.

Kirkley said she would recommend anyone wishing to grow professionally and personally to check out RichmondCC.

“I would recommend RichmondCC for many reasons, from the knowledgeable, caring instructors, to participating locally in educational goals, down to the reasonable costs in obtaining those goals,” she said.
