Pilot (Escort) Vehicle Operator Certification

This one-day course is designed to meet the training requirements set by the NC Department of Transportation to certify oversize-overweight load escort vehicle drivers, as required by G.S. 20-119 and detailed in 19A NCAC 02D.0644. Course components consist of defensive driving, escort driver requirements, skills training, and an exam.

Class Dates

Friday, Feb. 28, 2025 | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Grimsley Building, room 236| Hamlet Campus

Course Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license without restrictions other than for use of corrective lens and has a driving history without conviction of driving while impaired or reckless driving in the previous 12 months.

Other State Requirements

  • Students must complete the defensive driving course.
  • Successful completers of the class will also be asked to submit a certified driving record to NCDOT for official certification. Students with out-of-state licenses are required to get certified records from their state of residency, which show records of at least 3 years.

Recertification Class

This class is for individuals who need to renew their operator’s license. The course is a refresher course, which includes instruction on safety and effective escort skills. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will issue you a certificate at no charge.
