EKG Technician

Picture of a heart monitorEKG/ECG Technicians play an important role in healthcare by helping detect and manage heart conditions. They perform tests that monitor the heart’s electrical activity, prepare patients for various monitoring procedures, and ensure results are accurately recorded and shared with physicians. Their responsibilities also include scheduling appointments and documenting medical interpretations, all while supporting patients of all ages in preventing and assisting with the treatment of heart disease.

Duties include:

  • Operating EKG equipment
  • Running and mounting strips
  • Reading and interpreting 22 types of cardiac lead tracings produced from 12 and 5-lead monitors
  • Understanding the basics of capnography as it relates to heart function.
  • Basic Vital Signs
  • Monitoring Patient Conditions

Class Details & Cost

Aug. 24 - Dec. 10 | Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 12 to 2:30 p.m. PLUS these Tuesdays: Sept. 8, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27 | Grimsley Building, rm. 204, Hamlet Campus | Clinicals start Nov. 13.

Costs: Tuition is $180; fees are $245.

Certification Examination: After successfully completing this course, students are eligible to take the NHA Certified EKG Technician Examination (CET) with the National Healthcareer Association.

Class Requirements

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (GED or HiSET), or are scheduled to earn a high school diploma or GED/high school equivalency in the next 12 months
  • Accuplacer Next Generation Reading score of 250 or higher OR Must have taken ENG 111 and earned a C or better
  • Valid driver’s license or state-issued picture ID
  • Current TB skin test, flu shot, and immunization records
  • Physical (school form)
