Moore Family Establishes Award and Scholarship for EMS Students
June 4, 2025 - Richmond Community College Emergency Medical Technician graduate Savannah Magyar received the Moore Family EMT Certification Award during last week’s EMT & Paramedic Pinning Ceremony.
The award was established in honor and memory of John and Carolyn Moore, who volunteered with the Cordova and Ellerbe Rescue Squads from the early 1990s until John’s death in the line of duty on Aug. 19, 2002. This award is presented to an EMT graduate who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and self-sacrifice demonstrated by John & Carolyn Moore.
The family also established the Moore Family Emergency Medical Science Endowed Scholarship to benefit deserving students in the Emergency Medical Science program at RichmondCC.
According to the Moore family, “John and Carolyn highly prized lifelong learning as a means by which they could serve those around them, especially those in most need. The goal of this scholarship is to carry on their legacy by supporting future generations of responders whose sacrifices every day can mean the difference between life and death.”
“It is very apparent that the Moore family values service to those in need. John and Carolyn Moore served by devoting years to volunteerism and self-sacrifice during the most trying and scary times in the lives of fellow citizens they never knew. Eric Moore chooses to serve by honoring his parents in a way that will manifest for years to come: an endowed scholarship,” said Dr. Wendy Kelly Jordan, Associate Vice President for Development at RichmondCC. “Many RichmondCC students who also answered the call to live, love and serve in their community will benefit from the generosity of the Moore family through this college scholarship and the certification award.”
Through generous donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, the RichmondCC Foundation is able to help students financially and support the development of new programs and services that are needed in the community. There are many ways to give to the RichmondCC Foundation.
“If you’ve been positively impacted as a student or community member by RichmondCC, we have plenty of opportunities for you to give back to our community by donating to the Foundation,” Jordan said.
These donations enable the Foundation to meet a need, whether that be financial assistance to students, purchasing upgraded equipment for a program, or developing a program to address a newly identified need in our service area.
