Cockman: Teaching Is Honorable Profession

Oct 31

Lindy and Claudia Cockman pose for a photo.Oct. 31, 2025 - Last year, the Lindy and Claudia Cockman family established the Roberta Clyde Edwards Gore Endowment Scholarship for Future Teachers with the RichmondCC Foundation. This scholarship is for Richmond Community College students pursuing a career in education, just as Mrs. Roberta Clyde Edwards Gore had done for almost 40 years.

“I think that Richmond Community College is a vital part of this community and serves students well,” said Claudia Cockman, daughter of Mrs. Gore. “It is a wonderful steppingstone for those who want to pursue a career in education.”

Mrs. Cockman said she and her husband I.L. “Lindy” Cockman felt this scholarship was a great way to honor her mother’s life and passion for teaching.

“I am proud that these students are choosing education as their career choice. I can’t think of another career that one should be prouder to have. Teachers are an essential part of the future,” Mrs. Cockman said. “It makes me very proud when someone chooses to go into that profession.”

When asked what she would say to students benefitting from the Roberta Clyde Edwards Gore Endowment Scholarship, she said, “I just hope it will help others go into this honorable profession of teaching and hopefully will benefit out county. We hope that some of the students will choose to use this as an opportunity to come back to this community to teach,” Mrs. Cockman said.
