RCC Offering Health Care Classes Online for Changing Job Market

Feb 3

The great bulk of new jobs that will be created in this decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, will be in service industries such as health care services.

Electronic Health Records

To keep up with this growing demand for skilled health care workers, Richmond Community College’s Workforce and Economic Development (WED) division has developed several continuing education classes that cater to the health care sector.

Beginning Feb. 9, RCC will offer an online class for Electronic Health Records Certification.

“Health care is rapidly changing, and the Electronic Health Records Certification will provide students with a stackable credential and prepare them to work for physicians and hospitals, which are mandated under the Affordable Care Act to convert all patient records to a digital format,” said WED Vice President Robbie Taylor.

Trained Electronic Health Records specialists are responsible for organizing and managing patient health data in digital formats and for ensuring quality, accuracy, accessibility and security of patient documentation.

“We are offering the course online to make it easier for people who are working to take the class and earn the certification,” Taylor said.

The course, which runs through May 31, prepares students for the Electronic Health Records Certification Exam and earn the credential offered through the National Healthcareer Association. Students who successfully complete the course will also earn 9.6 continuing education units (CEUs) from RCC.

Also being offered this spring is a WED class providing instruction on the fundamentals of dementia care.

“Whether you are caring for a family member who is suffering from dementia or you are a health care professional, this online course will provide the knowledge and skills related to caring for people with all levels of dementia,” Taylor said. “The online format of the class is perfect for people who need flexible scheduling to continue their education.”

The Dementia Care Fundamentals course will be offered March 16 through May 10.
