Jack R. Hill III Scholarship Awarded to Welding Graduate
Aug. 18, 2025 - Weaver Owenby was awarded the Jack R. Hill III Welding Scholarship during a ceremony recognizing students completing Richmond Community College’s Welding program.
The scholarship was established in memory of former welding student, Jack R. Hill III, who was the son of Robyn Smith and Robbie Hill.
Jack graduated from Richmond Senior High School and was enrolled in RichmondCC’s Welding program in 2016-2017.
“Jack learned the art of welding and exceeded all expectations. He recognized the potential of a successful and lucrative career working with his hands in this trade. He had the goal of one day becoming a master welder,” said Welding Technology Program Coordinator Ricky Freeman.
Jack’s mother presented the scholarship to Owenby, who embodies the same desire for welding and building a career as a welder.
“Jack loved his time here welding. He loved everything about it,” Smith said.
Owenby has completed both the Welding I and II classes at RichmondCC. He is currently working as a welder at Ferro Fab Inc. in Hamlet.
While in the Welding program at RichmondCC, Owenby fabricated many projects, including a life-size royal crown made from a bicycle chain, swing set chain and a vehicle ball mount. It is on display in the Forte Building where the welding lab is located.
