Giving to RichmondCC Family Thing for Cavendish

Sep 26

Kay Cavendish poses for photoSept. 26, 2025 - Kay Cavendish says “it is a family thing” to give to the Richmond Community College Foundation. For over 30 years, she and her family have established three endowed scholarships to help students achieve their educational and career goals.

“My niece got her LPN from here in the early 1980s. When she was killed in a wreck in the late 1980s, my brother and his wife established an endowed scholarship in her memory,” Cavendish said.

This is the Emma Lou Daniels Brown Endowed Scholarship.

In the late 1990s, when Canvendish’s sister-in-law passed away, she and her brother decided to establish another endowed scholarship in her memory. This is the Wyndie Brown Hayes Endowed Scholarship.

In June 2010, Cavendish established the Harry T. & George W. Brown Craftsmen’s Endowed Scholarship in memory of her two brothers who both passed away in their 80s in the early 2000s. However, she started saving for this scholarship when they were still alive. It was intended for her older brother, and he was pleased with her decision to put her money toward an endowment scholarship with the College, instead of birthday and Christmas gifts for him.

“They were so close in life, I decided to honor both of them with this endowment,” she said.

This scholarship provides financial support for students enrolled in programs to learn a trade skill.

“Both of my brothers, Harry and George, grew up during the great depression. They could fix anything and do any project around the house that they set their minds to, unlike their sister,” she said. “We need more people out there who can fix our plumbing, electric, air and other things around the house.”

Cavendish has witnessed over the years all the good that RichmondCC has brought to the communities it serves. She highly commends the early college program.

“It is so important to the citizens of Richmond and Scotland County to get an affordable education here at home to help them support themselves, their families, and transfer to a four-year institution to complete a higher degree if they so desire,” Cavendish said. “I give to support this wonderful asset to our community.”
