Fridays at the Forte Series Kick off May 31 at Richmond Community College

May 27, 2019 – A series of workforce advancement classes known as “Fridays at the Forte” will be offered May 31 through July 12 every Friday at Richmond Community College in the John E. Forte Building.

This series is comprised of 10 courses ranging from the basics of electrical components to Office 365 & One Drive. The classes are designed to allow individuals to refresh their training, earn CEUs (continuing education units) and advance their skills and knowledge.

The first class on Friday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is a two-part Office 365 & One Drive! Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of online applications that allow you to create Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and much more. Basic computer skills are required for completion of the course. Both classes are required for certification.

On Friday, June 7, Mental Health First Aid will be offered from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training that gives people in our community the tools to identify when someone might by struggling with a mental health or substance abuse problem and to connect them withappropriate support and resources when necessary. No prior experience or knowledge is needed as the course is designed for community members who want to help those who are dealing with mental health issues. 

Hazmat & Bloodborne Pathogens class will take place on Friday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This course provides hazmat and bloodborne pathogen training to familiarize the participant with various hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens. Participants will learn methods to reduce exposure and steps to follow in the event of exposure

Arc Flash Safety, will be offered Friday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Arc Flash Safety is a course designed to train electricians, maintenance mechanics and machine operators about arc flash safety in an industrial setting.

On Friday, June 21, PLC Programming Fundamentals and the first part of OSHA 10 will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., PLC Programming Fundamentals course will cover what PLCs are and how they differ from relay circuits. Topics covered will include the introduction to PLC programming, types of programming languages and basic programming instructions. OSHA 10 for industry provides training for entry-level workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplaces in general industry. 

PLC Communications & Writing, offered on Friday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will introduce students to the basic components of PLCs, input terminals, output terminals, power sourcing and programming cables. Also on June 28, is the second part of OSHA 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 and CPR, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. In this four-hour CPR class, participants will learn how to perform CPR correctly on infants and adults. Upon completion students, will earn a Heart Saver CPR certification. 

July 12, PLC Troubleshooting and Volts, Amps, and Ohms. Oh, My! These two classes will be offered at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PLC Troubleshooting will introduce students to automation troubleshooting techniques. Students will learn a systematic approach to troubleshooting with hands-on practical applications. Volts, Amps, and Ohms. Oh My! This course will teach students the basics of electrical components. 

The Fridays at the Forte series will wrap-up on July 12. Pre-registration and tuition payment is required for all courses by 3 p.m. the Thursday before the class meets. Minimum enrollment is also required.
