A team of nursing students from Richmond Community College captured the “Syringe Bowl” title at an annual competition, which among community college nursing programs holds the same prestige as NFL’s Super Bowl.

The students who competed in the bowl are second-year Associate Degree Nursing students. The annual competition prepares them for the rigorous NCLEX, the National Council Licensure Examination that will make them registered nurses.

“I am very proud of our students and our faculty who worked hard to bring us home a victory at the Syringe Bowl,” said RichmondCC Nursing Department Chair Carole Gibson. “This is a great example of our dedicated nursing instructors preparing top quality nurses for the workforce.”

Held March 17 at Robeson Community College, the Syringe Bowl included students from RichmondCC, Sampson Community College, Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) and Robeson. Each school had three teams for a grand total of 12 teams competing.

Team A from RichmondCC advanced from rounds one and two to compete in the semi-finals with Sampson. They beat Sampson to advance to the finals.

RichmondCC Team A then competed against FTCC in the final round to become the Syringe Bowl champions. RichmondCC’s Team C also advanced to the semi-finals, where they lost to FTCC by one question.
