Bullard, Gibson Reel in the Big One at the Bass Fishing Classic

May 1

May 1, 2018 – Jonathan Bullard and Buck Gibson caught some big fish and the winning prize money on Saturday, April 28, at the inaugural Bass Fishing Classic put on by the President’s Club of Richmond Community College. The winners of the Bass Fishing Classic hold their trophies and the winning fish.

Bullard and Gibson reeled in the bass weighing the most pounds, which also helped tip the scales for the best grouping of bass. They won $100 and a trophy for each category.

The fishing tournament held at RichmondCC’s lake on the main campus in Hamlet was a fundraiser for the College’s Summer STEM Camps. Students from the College’s Drone Academy also got to participate, as they were able to test their skills by flying a drone over the lake and taking photos of the tournament from above while everyone was fishing. Remote PIC Probyn Thompson, president and CEO of Air Probe LLC, led the students through the flight training exercise and made sure all proper procedures were followed to ensure a safe flight.

Saturday’s tournament was open to 25 boats, and 24 boats were put in the water on Saturday morning starting as early as 6:30 a.m.

“This was our first time hosting an event like this, and we had a great turn out,” said Dr. Hal Shuler, Associate Vice President of Development. “We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to be out fishing on the lake. Based on the positive feedback we received from everyone at the tournament, we hope to be able to host another fishing event in the future.”

When fishing wrapped up at 11:30 a.m. and after the fish were weighed in, everyone was treated to a hotdog and hamburger lunch and some snacks donated by Mid-South Vending. There was also a raffle drawing, and several people went home with brand new rod and reels thanks to a donation from Big Rock Sports.Photo of the lake and the fishing tournament from above.
