Globally Ready Engineering and TechnologyStudent giving the thumbs up in a summer STEM camp

RCC G.R.E.A.T. is a way to reach young people and spark an interest in science, technology, engineering and math, better known as STEM subjects, by making engineering and technology fun and interactive. From flying drones to combining visual arts and 3-D printing, the RCC G.R.E.A.T. Saturday Academy and summer camps keep young minds stimulated and hands busy while preparing them for future careers that don't even exist in the present day.

Saturday Academy

In the Saturday Academy, which is held one Saturday a month from October through May, students experience emerging technologies in computer programming, 3-D printing, robotics, geographic information systems, computer-aided drafting and digital design. Saturday Academy is open to students in grades 5-12.

Total cost: $40 (Price includes lunch.)

Summer STEM Camps

Like the Saturday Academy, the Summer STEM Camps provide an immersive and fun learning environment in which students can acquire and practice higher level thinking skills. Camps are held June through July in both Richmond and Scotland counties. Camps run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (lunch provided) Monday through Thursday and are open to grades 3-12. Here is what students learn during the Summer STEM Camps:

  • Geospatial Math: Integrating 3D scanning, visualization, printing and simulations, this camp will expose students to the engineering process and have the opportunity to design and print objects in 3D.
  • Cracking the Code: Students will learn about coding and video game design as a way to enhance their math, logical thinking, problem solving and analysis skills. These skills are essential for reading comprehension  and understanding math concepts in the classroom. Students will use their newfound skills in games that involve strategic thinking such as chess, and they will have opportunities for artistic expression through fun hands-on activities.
  • Architectural Design: This camp gives middle and high school students the opportunity to explore the world of design and architecture. Students will explore basic design principles and techniques to create hands-on building and model-making activities.
  • Robotics: This camp is designed for middle and high school students who have an interest in robotics, programmable controllers and/or engineering. To enroll, students must have completed the RCC G.R.E.A.T. Saturday Academy. Students will experience state-of-the-art robotics technology and learn the basic principles of industrial robots with an emphasis on programming skills, problem-solving skills and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced 3D Modeling: This camp is designed for students who have completed the Geospatial Math camp. It continues an examination of 3D technologies and includes more emphasis on industry-focused design concepts and 3D printing.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): This camp will introduce participants to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a science technology used in industry, government and business to manage and analyze data. Students will take part in activities that will help them understand how GIS works and how GIS impacts our everyday lives.

Each camp is $20. (Price includes lunch.)
