Two Grants Available to Help Students in Need Complete College

Nov 12

Nov. 12, 2018 — Richmond Community College is now able to offer more resources for students facing financial hardships that could prevent them from completing their college degree, diploma or certificate.

Hurricane Florence Grant Program

In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the General Assembly has appropriated funds for the purpose of providing emergency scholarship grants to students who suffered financial setbacks due to the damage and destruction from this catastrophic storm. These funds may be used to cover many expenses that support a student’s continued enrollment, including cost related to transportation, textbooks, tuition, fees and living expenses.grant filing

For a student to be eligible for the Hurricane Florence Grant Program, he or she must:

  1. Be enrolled at the time of application for grant funds.
  2. Have a financial need related to the impact of Hurricane Florence and the grant is necessary to alleviate the impact so that the student can remain enrolled.

The student must also meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Was enrolled at an institution of higher education located in an impacted county on Sept. 10, 2018.
  2. Resided temporarily or permanently in an impacted county on Sept. 10, 2018.

RichmondCC students facing hardships from Hurricane Florence are encouraged to come to Student Services located in the Lee Building on the College’s main campus in Hamlet to apply for this grant. Students will need to provide documentation of loss or need.

Finish Line Grant Program

Financial emergencies like unexpected healthcare costs, childcare expenses, or car breakdowns often prevent community college students who are on the cusp of completing a degree, diploma or certificate. Finish Line Grants will help students reach that milestone when facing unforeseen challenges.

Finish Line Grants can be used for auto repairs, utility bills, course materials, tuition and fees, housing, medical needs, dependent care or other financial emergencies that students face through no fault of their own. These federal grants will be available for the 2018-2019 school year.

Students enrolled in RichmondCC are eligible to apply for these grants. They must be in good academic standing and have completed 75 percent of their degree or credential, including their current enrollment.

RichmondCC will collaborate with the local Workforce Development Board and NC Works to review funding requests from students in need. Funds will be disbursed through the Workforce Development Board.

RichmondCC students are encouraged to come to Student Services located in the Lee Building on the College’s main campus in Hamlet to apply for a Finish Line Grant. Students will need to provide documentation of loss or need. For more information, call Student Services at (910) 410-1730.
