RCC Foundation Hosts Annual Scholarship Banquet

Mar 29

Richmond Community College Foundation recognized 281 scholarship recipients during its annual academic awards banquet on March 22 at the Cole Auditorium. The recipients were also given the opportunity to meet donors to thank them for their generosity in helping defray the cost of tuition and textbooks.

RCC Foundation President David Wood opened the program by acknowledging the donors who make the scholarships possible and the students whose hard work has earned them the scholarships. He also thanked the instructors at RichmondCC who care about the educational goals of their students.

Pictured are the Working Scholarship recipients who attended the academic awards banquet on March 22. The Working Scholarship provided financial assistance to 87 Richmond Community College students. Wood relayed to the audience the many ways RichmondCC is ahead of most community colleges in the state, noting its steady enrollment growth while other colleges are seeing declines.

“At the recent ground breaking for RSI Home Products, the CEO of the company expressed his gratitude to Richmond Community College for going out of its way to meet their needs in bringing this new plant to the county,” Wood said.

Wood also called RichmondCC “one of the shining stars” of the bond referendum package passed by voters during the March 15 election, as the College is receiving $7.22 million from the Connect NC bond.

“It is because of RichmondCC’s continued growth and continued excellence that has put it at the top of the list of funding recipients,” Wood said.

Dr. Dale McInnis, president of RichmondCC, also spoke during the ceremony, recognizing members of the Board of Trustees and the RCC Foundation Board of Directors, as well as applauding faculty and staff for their efforts to help RichmondCC’s students achieve success.

“Tonight we celebrate the success of our great students, tremendous faculty and a generous community willing to give back,” McInnis said.

Among the nearly 100 scholarships offered at RichmondCC, the Working Scholarship was awarded to a record number of 87 recipients. The Working Scholarship was created to assist working students whose income disqualifies them from receiving full state or federal assistance.

The growth of this scholarship has been largely supported by individuals, families and businesses from throughout the community. A major fundraiser for the Working Scholarship is the RCC Foundation Anniversary Gala, which is scheduled for April 16 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Cole Auditorium. Corporate sponsorship opportunities are available beginning at $1,000, which includes two tickets to the event, as well as recognition on all marketing materials. Individual tickets to the Gala are being sold for $50.
