Iconic '70s Movie Gains New Life as Broadway Musical

Feb 5

Break out the bellbottoms and leisure suits on Thursday, Feb. 11, and get ready for “Saturday Night Fever,” The Musical, coming to the Cole Auditorium located on Richmond Community College’s main campus in Hamlet.

All the magic and music of the 1977 movie starring John Travolta is brought to the stage by this Broadway production group.

“We are excited to bring a full-scale musical to our area. With the recent productions of musicals like ‘The Wiz’ and ‘Grease,’ just to name a few on network television, there has been a renewed interest in musical theater,” said Cole Auditorium Director Joey Bennett.

“Saturday Night Fever” is an iconic piece of movie history as well as theater history. It is one of the most beloved dance stories of all time with the coming of age tale of young Tony Manero, who learns the value of life in 1970s Brooklyn.

The musical is packed with legendary hits from the Bee Gees, including ““Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “Jive Talking,” “You Should Be Dancing” and “How Deep is Your Love,” in addition to several new songs written especially for this show.

“This musical is a break from the tradition of performing the standard musicals that we have featured before like ‘The Sound of Music,’ ‘Showboat’ and ‘Annie.’ We hope that we reach new audience members with more contemporary piece,” Bennett said.
