11 Complete Truck Driver Training at RichmondCC

Feb. 4, 2016 - Eleven people are ready to hit the road and explore new horizons because of the collaboration between Richmond Community College and Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute on a truck driver training program.Sen. McInnis was instrumental in securing funding for this program to make it affordable for people looking to begin a career with the trucking industry.

RichmondCC held its graduation ceremony Jan. 29 for the truck driver training program that wrapped up last month. All 11 graduates of the program received job offers, and several of the graduates received multiple offers.

Graduates of the program include Sophia K. Bennett of Lilesville, Casey J. Braddock of Rockingham, Paul T. Capel of Ellerbe, Steven V. Daniels of Laurinburg, Tyrone Davis of Hamlet, Michael E. Gribbins of Rockingham, Shawn A. Jackson of Charlotte, Vernon P. McLean Jr. of Rockingham, William S. McNair if Rockingham, Charles R. Nelson of Rockingham and Dontreice Pratt of Laurinburg.

The eight-week program provided classroom lecture followed by many practice sessions behind the wheel. Upon completion of the course, students took the final road test for their commercial driver’s license at RichmondCC’s training facility.

Training Requirements

In order to qualify for the truck driver training program at RichmondCC, students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license with no limiting restrictions. Students must also be able to read and speak English well enough to take instructions from highway signs, converse with officials and complete the required reports. Completion of a physical and drug screening are also required prior to the first day of class.

Many Job Opportunities

The truck driving industry employs nearly 9 million people in trucking-related jobs. These jobs include operations manager, trucking dispatch, terminal manager, driver manager and maintenance coordinator.

However, there is a growing shortage of drivers, and entry-level drivers are entering a demanding field where there is a premium placed on quality student drivers fresh out of training.
